Indio, Riverside County
Most of the dates grown in the United States come from the Coachella Valley, and Indio has celebrated the harvest for generations. The county fair held here each February is called the National Date Festival and features camel races. Shields Date Garden, open on Highway 111 since 1924, still serves date shakes to travelers.
